GAVIN Hunt has become one of the highest paid coaches in the Premier Soccer League, thanks to his monthly salary of R750000 at new club BidVest Wits.
Hunt quit SuperSport United yesterday to join The Clever Boys where he was given a signing-on fee of R10-million.
The figures were confirmed by reliable sources close to both parties.
He has signed a three-year deal with an option to renew for another 12 months.
Despite the telephone directory figures stemming from the deal, Hunt was quick to point out his departure had nothing to do with the amount of money involved.
The astute coach said it was about a change of environment after being with United for six years.
"Look, it's not about money here at all.
"I know three of four coaches in the PSL who earn far better than I do," said Hunt, who refused to confirm the money involved in his move to Milpark.
On leaving United, where he won three successive Absa Premiership titles, he said: "It's a sad day for me, I really enjoyed myself at the club and I believe in continuity."
Hunt will be reunited with his old friend, club chief executive Jose Ferreira, who was chief operations officer at the Tshwane club before joining Wits.
Hunt had two years remaining on his three-year contract at United and that meant either the former Hellenic star - or Wits - had to buy him out of the obligation.
He was reportedly earning R3-million per annum at United.
Ferreira said of Hunt: "He has an impressive CV, not only with SuperSport United but with every other club he has coached prior to that.
"We have signed a long-term contract with him and we believe that, in line with our vision for the club, he is the right coach to lead the process we have embarked on to transform our team into a competitive force in South African football."
Hunt's appointment means Wits have shown former Bafana Bafana coach Clive "The Dog" Barker the door despite doing a great job to help them finish fourth on the Absa Premiership table.
Ferreira said they were grateful to Barker for a job well done in his capacity as caretaker coach, following the departure of Antonio Lopez Habas.
