THE South African Revenue Service has won a total of four Public Sector Excellence (PSX) Awards, recognising its all-round brilliance in serving South Africans during the past 12 months.

PSX Awards are an independent assessment and celebration of excellence in the public service as voted by its customers - the citizens.

The survey was conducted nationally among a random and demographically representative sample of 1500 people between May and June last year.

Another stand-out winner was the Department of Basic Education which, despite a challenging year, distinguished itself as top department under the leadership of Minister Angie Motshekga.

Government's HIV Awareness campaign was recognised with a Grand Prix award.

The awards ceremony was held in Sandton on Tuesday night. Lifetime Achievement Awards for Distinguished Public Service went to former chairwoman of the Independent Electoral Commission, Brigalia Bam , and businessman Sam Motsuenyane for dedicating themselves to improving the lives of South Africans.

These special two awards were decided by the PSX Advisory Council made up of prominent public and private sector thought leaders, decision makers and academics.

"Continuing to set the benchmark for excellent service in the Public Sector, Sars and Basic Education distinguished themselves among their peers having made a positive impression on ordinary South Africans," said Thebe Ikalafeng, group MD of The Brand Leadership Group and founder of PSX.

In addition to the Grand Prix Award, Sars also won three other Gold Awards in the categories: effectiveness, service orientation and sector excellence.

Ikalafeng said the Grand Prix awards were so prestigious because they were based not only on citizens' feedback, but also on the input of the advisory council.

What a disgrace.this minute sample is not representative of all taxpayers and non taxpayers who use the services of SARS. They're only good at collecting tax but go to one of their centres and you will stand the whole day on a queue that is not moving.
Try send an e-mail on their enquiry or info email address and you will realise that there is no service. These awards were awarded on biased findings.Talk to some of their staff and you'll think perhaps you're less human. When i think of what happened to me i get angry at this undeserved all round praises.

Award well deserved. This last financial year, i forgot my password for e-filing. Gave them a call, was promptly helped and the lady assisting me stayed on the line for about half an hour, fixing the problem and helping me with my submission. She stayed friendly and patient. Well done!!!
