Emancipation Day in Trinidad and Tobago- PHOTOS

Trinidad and Tobago commemorated Emancipation Day at the Port of Spain with a festival and performance on the 1st August.

According to the Trinidad and Tobago News Day hundreds gathered dressed in African clothing outside the Treasury Building on the Brian Lara Promenade - The site is also where the Emancipation Proclamation was read announcing the beginning of the end of slavery.

The festival included dancers, Moko Jumbies and the rhythm sections in dance and song.

 Emancipation Day commemorates the liberation of formerly enslaved Africans and their struggles and resistance to the institution of slavery.
