Gauteng tolls to start on roads next year

There will be 42 electronic tolling points that will be 10 kilometres apart

Tolls on Gauteng's highways will start operating by the second quarter of 2011, dramatically boosting the South African National Roads Agency's toll income.

State-owned SANRAL has not set the toll tariffs yet.

For 2010-2011, SANRAL will earn 1.63 billion rand in toll income, but this will surge to 5.76 billion in 2011-2012.

SANRAL CEO Nazir Alli said: "We are going to collect money and get what is due to us".

But Alli denied that the toll roads will increase the cost on transport.  Instead, he asserted, the agency will reduce the costs of transport by providing good quality roads.

Throughout the province, there will be 42 electronic tolling points that will be 10 kilometres apart.

Alli said the company may set tariffs within two months.

The introduction of electronic tolling in Gauteng, the country's economic hub, comes as SANRAL finishes $the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project.

As part of this multibillion rand project, SANRAL has completed the upgrade of William Nicole interchange, the N4 Nelspruit bypass and the Leandra to Level section of the N17.

SANRAL said the first phase on the Gauteng freeway project, revamping 185 kilometres of notoriously congested freeways, remains under construction.
