SOUTH Africa's iconic musical couple Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbulu have been lined up by the Department of Arts and Culture to perform during the 2010 Fifa World Cup shows.

Also included is the multiple award-winning singer Lira, who is the daughter of soccer legend and SuperSport United manager Webster Lichabe.

The department has entered into an agreement with various artists to perform at the Market and Windybrow theatres to celebrate the staging of the World Cup in this country. All shows are scheduled to start at 9pm daily.

Zindala Zombili will be the first group to perform at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg today. Others to perform at the Market Theatre include Bongo Maffin, The Parlotones, Ligugu LemaSwati, Lira, Kwani Experience and Karen Zoid.

The Windybrow Theatre shows will start on Saturday, with Sechaba and Vigorous Gospel Dancers billed to entertain the fans. Tap Rots will perform at Windybrow from July 6 to July 9, with Semenya and Mbulu performing on July 10, a day before the final of the World Cup.

Minister of Arts and Culture Lulu Xingwana said the performances were some of the World Cup-linked projects undertaken by her department.

Xingwana said many of these projects will leave a lasting legacy for the people in communities where they will be developed, and also help showcase the cultural diversity and history of South Africa and its people.

Other projects are in Tzaneen, Mthatha, Port Elizabeth, Pietermaritzburg, Tshwane, North West, Free State and Northern Cape.

Situated in Hillbrow, the Windybrow Theatre is also benefiting from funding from the department as it seeks to reinvent itself. The theatre will also have some exciting shows in its lineup such as The Island, written by Athol Fugard and directed by Mpho Molepo, which will be staged from July 6 to July 11.
