Call to rally behind Ghana

SOUTH African celebrities have joined the chorus calling for the continent to rally round the Black Stars of Ghana in their quest to win the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

The Ghanaians are 90 minutes away from making history by becoming the first African country to reach the semifinals of the tournament. Ghana are the third African team to reach the quarterfinals after the Roger Milla-led Cameroon and El Hadji Diouf's Senegal reached this stage in 1990 and 2002. Ghana play Uruguay in the quarterfinals at Soccer City on Friday.

Internationally renowned runner Hendrick Ramaala said Ghana deserved to go all the way to the final and win the World Cup.

"Ghana have been simply the best. It's the real African World Cup and we are over the moon that a team from the continent is on everybody's lips. As Africans we need to rally round Ghana in all their remaining matches, starting with Uruguay on Friday," said Ramaala, a staunch Kaizer Chiefs supporter.

Radio commentator Simon "Kolobe" Ramafalo is also rooting for the Black Stars, saying they have made Africa proud. He said Ghana deserved to be called the Black Stars of Africa.

"What a coincidence - Ghana were the first country in Africa to gain independence in 1957. In 2006 at the World Cup, Ghana were the only African team to reach the second round.

"Ghana were the first African team to qualify for the 2010 World Cup and went on to become the first African team to register a win in this tournament.

"Ghana were once again the last African team standing in this tournament.

"We need to support them for making Africa proud and I have no doubt they will go all the way to the final and win it," Ramafalo said.

Boxing great Jacob "Baby Jake" Matlala said: "Ghana are my team of the tournament. We need to support their quest to win the Cup. They have the ability to achieve this feat."
