ACTING is not all about glitz and glamour.
Soweto-born and bred actress Harriet Manamela has experienced the good and bad seasons of the acting business.
This is why she is sharing her life and industry lessons with the next generation of actors.
Manamela is best remembered for big and small roles in television productions such as Yizo Yizo, Soul City and Skeem Sam', movies including Yesterday and Hijack Stories and the play Roses And Angels.
The single mother of three says she took it upon herself to be the change she wanted to see in the performing arts by offering drama, voice, dance and life skills workshops for young actors.
"I was not well informed when I started acting professionally in the late 1980s," Manamela says.
"I made mistakes by not financially managing my income, which led to me being broke and having to rely on family for bail-outs.
"I don't want to see these youngsters having misconceptions about the acting industry, and erroneously thinking that there's money lying all over the place."
Manamela says she was fulfilled by interacting with young kids at events including acting workshops, because youngsters did not judge her.
"My passion for acting has kept me sane," she says. "But, I am bolstered more by the smiles I see on the faces of the youngsters at the workshops."
Manamela's acting and financial skills workshops started in Alexandra a few years ago and soon branched out to other areas.
Her initial target was high school pupils. But Manamela says that she also came to see significant interest from primary school-age youths.
"I'm currently busy with workshops in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, as part of the Dare to Dream Community Building Initiative," she says.
"Most of the workshops take place during school holidays and participants get certificates upon completion."
