Don't trust - read all documents. I got taken for a ride on my first car as well and was never robbed again because I make it clear to the salesman, the price we agreed on is the price I will pay - no extras. The salesman invoiced me for something called "Lustreking". He said it was to insure the paintwork against scratches and other damages.

Thanks Sowetan for this article.

Dealerships and banks always do this to unsuspecting clients but with this coverage, most of us will not be ripped off!

Thanks...

Downgrade from a Merc to a new Xtrail? These cars are the same price. Or maybe downgrading the badge.

lesson, if you can afford a R6200-00 car instalments, you should be able to read............and understand contracts, dont just sign out of excitement.......and then cry foul here, if you sign a document, it means you agree with what is in it........its logic that you cannot agree with what you do not know/............

Buy your car CASH! Stop living above your means. If you are downgrading ,why don't you buy one of the Japanese used vehicles which are being sold in Durban seaport.Black folks need to let go of this their "look at me now" mentality and become financially prudent. For less than R50,000 ,you can get a decent Japanese used truck or a minibus.I don't feel pity for people like this. She says she is "downgrading" but goes and buy a R254,000 truck, how the f0ck is that downgrading! That is what happens when people who do not have self control or financial discipline have access to money.

Last week i got a call from a guy from Mp inquiring about extras he didn't understand in his contract because he thought his dealership was reeping him off. . . and i explained to him everything & what he should ask his Dealer. . . And that is what a person who does not know does; find someone who understands to explain to you instead of signing things you have no idea of just because you think you can AFFORD.......you got served.

I agree, we as black people would rather be high in debt while driving a nice car which gives us financial stress rather than drive a cheap car and have no financial stress. We must educate our people about the benefits of driving cheap cars. I drive a R100,000 car, I can afford a R250,000 car but I am saving the extra money for a rainy day.

Who in their right mind just signs such important papers without reading everything? even the fine print that gets you dizzy after a few minutes. it does not hurt to ask people you trust before committing yourself like that. does this mean she "blindly" siged documents when she was buying the Merc?

People, it is your responsibility to ensure you get the right car or house to buy, you do all the negotiating including optional extras etc and are only to sign documents once you've ensured the product your are taking delivery or occupation of is what you bought and there are no outstanding issues.

Banks are only invited to finance the purchase price, even then you still need to validate all material factors before signing the loan agreement which includes understanding the installment amount and what it is made up of.

In this instance if she has a problem she needs to address it with the dealer, the bank has nothing to do with the sale contract.

I advice anyone to read the contract before signing...on second thoughts its no use reading the contract, more often than not it is written in funny English that is not easy to understand.

I think it should become a law to write contracts in words that are simple and easy to understand. So far every word used in a contract is very complex and ofcourse causing bias

Yho!Yho!Yho!

Sorry Sistaz, I dis-agree with those who talk bad at you and call you names, as if they never made costly mistakes (perfect beings). I agree with those that advise everyone on buying a car cash, save for it if cash is not yet available. I hope that both the dealer and the bank would reconsider this lady's transaction and overlook the contract terms. Humanity must prevail, this transaction is a legal commercial crime.
