Second-hand car dealers have a way of getting rid of defective cars to the detriment of consumers.

Buyer beware.
If the car is bought 'voetstoets' then the seller is only responsible for latent or patent defects. Always take along someone who knows about cars or get the car checked by the AA. Your life is at risk if you don't make sure the vehicle is safe so take the extra time and do it

Take your receipt down to the police station and make an afidavit that you purchased the vehicle and they will do a police check on the vehicle and issue you with a declaration. You can use that to register the car in your name

Some people can't drive:

When driving the car home, she noticed the brakes were soft every time she came to a stop.
"The vehicle would come to an immediate halt and switch off.

Eish I know it may sound snobbish but mina I don't do 2nd hand cars for this very reason and all these dodgy new cars like Chery really now ba buyaphi? Get yourself a new Getz, Golf, Yaris even an Uno as long as its a reliable time tested brand and it is new. Had 4 cars from 0km drove all of them well over 300 000km.

@mrazane I once worked at a call centre for car dealerships. Even brand new cars have faults and the dealerships dont want to own up to responsibility for it. These dealerships only care about money and I got a lot of complaints from customers about that. Another thing that dealerships will often do to get money from you, is that when you come in for a service they will tell you that your vehicle needs new tyres when it doesnt at all. I dont know if I can name the dealerships but i'll tell you that the name starts with an h.

I worked with bmw, honda, barons, toyota, general motors, mercedes, chrysler, audi and more. The best in terms of service and customer service was sabaru. Barons and audi are the most expensive for parts and depending on which one you go to, the service can be extremely crapy or good enough. Most will send you sms's telling you that your car is due for a service when sometimes it really is not. And when you do pitch up for the service that you were not supposed to have, they will use technicalities to get you to pay for the service, such as ' it cant be covered on your service plan cos you came too early, so you have to pay cash, and in future they will use the fact that you came too early for service for their advantage. The same goes for late services or all services in general. Another thing that all dealerships like to do especially barons and bmw is this: you complain about problems with lets say a noise and for each time you go for a service whilst under a service plan, they will tell you that there is nothing wrong with it. However once you are out of service plan and complain about the same thing, they will all of a sudden find the problem and charge you a hefty price. There's no point in trying to speak or sending an email to their headoffices as they dont care. Toyota can be good or bad depending on which one you go to and the same goes for the ford and mazda dealerships. So everyone be aware!
