I cannot sleep or eat and have started fainting
Dear Dudu, I AM 24 years old and a first-year student at university staying in residence. I haven't been eating or sleeping lately and I feel dreadful. I have started fainting, which is very embarrassing.
The more I worry about not sleeping, the harder it is to fall asleep. The thought of eating makes me feel ill so I don't eat.
I am also finding it difficult to concentrate on my work, which is stressing me terribly.
My best friend has noticed that I am not eating and she was there when I fainted. She says there is something seriously wrong with me and that I have to go to a doctor.
I don't think I need to go to the doctor because if I just start eating and sleeping I will be fine. I am so scared that I am going to disappoint my family. Please help me. Weak, Braamfontein
Dudu says:
Your friend is right. You need to go to a doctor.
It is very possible that you are suffering from stress and this is not something that you can overcome on your own.
Stress can cause terrible and very different symptoms in people.
You have stopped looking after yourself and this is certainly a sign that you might be suffering from stress.
Being a student at university is a major adjustment for you and I can understand that you might be feeling overwhelmed. First thank your friend for her advice.
Tell her that you have realised that you need help and ask her for her continued support.
Go to a doctor and be honest about what is happening to you.
The doctor will give you advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle and probably medication to help you get your life back on track.
You also need to go to a counsellor on campus and explain what you have been going through.
Perhaps there are skills that the counsellor will be able to share with you on how to cope with the amount of work and university life generally.
Hopefully, you will soon be feeling much better. I wish you well with your studies.
