Wits students help matric pupils pass accountancy

GRADE 12 pupils from six Soweto high schools are well prepared for the matric accountancy examinations, thanks to extra lessons conducted by students from Wits University.

This Soweto Development Committee-led Maths, Science and Commerce Learning Centre project - taking place at the Fons Luminus High School in Diepkloof on Saturdays - caters for pupils from the Fons Luminus, Madibane, Bopasenatla, Fidelitas, Diepdale and Namedi high schools.

Led by councillors Vusi Sithole and Dan Padi, and academic Bheki Shongwe, the project seeks to improve the pupils' participation in mathematics, physical science and commercial subjects.

The Wits University students conducting the accountancy classes are led by the institution's accountancy department leaders, Professor Jacky Arendse and senior lecturers Ryan Mabutho and Thandeka Hlongwa.

The specialised lessons - which are not to be seen as a rival to the Basic Education Department's nationwide Secondary Schools Intervention Programme - are due to culminate with a mock examination on October 8, and a major revision session on October 15.

The project is being supported by Sowetan, SABC and the SA Institute of Architects, among several other nation-building partners.
