Tips to help you quit smoking

DOCTOR Ngwenya would like to know how to give up smoking.

  • Try to take up jogging, if you are healthy enough. This will make you feel healthier. Also, smoking will make jogging harder, so you will have to make a conscious choice between looking and feeling better (jogging) or staying out of breath and out of shape (smoking).
  • Make a conscious decision to cut down to, say, not more than one cigarette every hour, then change to one every two hours and so on.
  • Make certain times of the day and places smoke free. For example, don't smoke in your car and your bedroom.
  • Stop smoking before you develop one of the many bad diseases that smoking can lead to. Emphysema, for example, is a disease that ends in a slow, agonising death.
  • Tell yourself that smoking is a crime. -
