Lock no one can pick

THE kinds of locks we use today are less than 200 years old. In 1817 the British government offered a prize to anyone who could design a lock that a thief could not pick.

Jeremiah Chubb produced a lock that he said was safe.

The government gave the lock to a lock-picker, who was in jail.

He was told that he would be set free if he were able to pick the lock.

He tried for 10 weeks but could not open it.

Since it was invented, this lock has never been picked .

However, this is not the type of lock used in most homes, which usually have Yale locks.

the Yale cylinder locks were invented in 1861 by an American called Linus Yale.
