Many hands make Mimco

SPONSORED | Mimco prides itself on creating quality, design-led pieces that can be collected, treasured and loved. Here it presents one part of the design journey.

Sketches created by our Melbourne-based designers are brought to life by many skilled and experienced artisans in Asia, India, Spain and Argentina, people we have worked alongside – and learned from – for more than a decade.

The birth of ideas

The birth of a collection starts with an idea. Or rather, in the case of Mimco, with an abundance of ideas. We discuss, debate, design and then distil. The conception, sketching, making and sourcing of raw materials; logic-checking the “fall in love factor”; and quantifying takes about six months. It then takes another three months to produce the collection before it sets sail for our boutiques. The range takes time, love, attention and, above all, lots of care.

Creativity and collaboration

We’ve been working with most of our manufacturers for more than 10 years. Someone from our team visits and works with them nearly every month. The relationship is close and communication remains open. Collaboration is the magic word for bringing our collections to life.

Crafting the jewels

Starting with a sketch from our design team, master mould-makers hand-carve each mould before casting it in metal. Sanding, buffing and polishing – so many processes are applied to every piece.

Forming the bags

All the patterns are marked and cut by hand to ensure we get the dimensions right. Every strap is edge painted for a polished and sturdy finish.

Caring for shoes

Many processes go into making one pair of shoes, and years of training and expertise are required to make our shoe styles. Stitching, lasting and blocking – shoes are a world unto their own and many experts are required to get it right.
