Soweto will once again march into the history books by becoming the first township in South Africa to host a polo tournament.

The inaugural Soweto Polo Cup will be held on 28 October at the Soweto Equestrian Centre in Rockville. The event is being brought to life by founder of Hloni Mathlare with the help of South Africa's first ever black show-jumper and owner of the Equestrian Centre Enos Mafokate.

“I saw a big gap in Soweto. Soweto is ready for large scale bespoke events. I don’t think we have the type of events that north of Johannesburg has," said Matlhare.

“That’s why a lot of our people gravitate to the north to go spend their money. So I saw a big gap for these types of events for Soweto.”

Mathlare explained that the main purpose of the event is to help fund the Equestrian Center and also to add a polo school to the services they already provide.

The Soweto Equestrian Centre has been operational for 10 years and houses 15 horses. There are eight kids that compete in show-Jumping and 12 kids who compete in vaulting.

He said that the polo school will help give young people with a passion for the sport a starting point. The school will be started in partnership with the Inanda Polo Club which is heavily involved in the Soweto Polo Cup.

On the day of the event two development polo teams will go head to head and the main match will be between two professional teams from Gauteng. These teams will be sourced by the Inanda Polo Club.

For the fashion lovers, the theme for the event is “What Jo’burg means to me” .
