Dating a celeb can put you under pressure

We all have a weakness for celebrity couples. Their romance, drama, break-ups and make-ups always keep us entertained.

While some celebrities opt to date people who work in the same entertainment industry, quite a few have stepped out of their comfort zone and dated people who are not famous.

Who can forget the drama we read about in the tabloids about our very own celebrities? There has been a fatal stabbing, cheating allegations, an alleged sex tape of a famous DJ and a woman who claimed her football star husband was gay and cheating with other men. We've heard it all!

But what does it take to date a celebrity? Can you handle the pressure that comes with their lifestyle? Is there a way to avoid the drama?

Relationship counsellor Lethabo Ntsasa says that one needs to keep in mind that a relationship with a celebrity is like a regular relationship on steroids.

"You cannot walk into a relationship with a famous person and expect to treat it like any other relationship.

"Already, their star status puts you in the firing line and the media will dissect your relationship.

"That in itself can be immense pressure on the partner who is not as famous as their celebrity partner."

So how does one handle the pressure?

Ntsasa says there are five questions one should ask themselves before dating a celebrity:

If you believe in your celebrity significant other, you will recognise that they are doing what they love, it just happens to be on television. Be able to separate the hype from the real person.
