Place to be for fun and relaxation

After years of only seeing The Carousel Casino when speeding past en route to Polokwane in Limpopo on the N1, I finally got to visit the complex last year to experience the Kofifi Movement evening.

Having danced the night away until the wee hours, myself and a group of friends contemplated sleeping over to avoid driving back home late at night but ended up braving the road as we had no idea what type of hotel the establishment offered as it is hardly marketed on our radar.

This past week I got to experience first hand the hospitality at the Sun Carousel Hotel after being invited as a guest of the casino.

For a Friday night drive, I did not expect to meet so much traffic on my way up there but it seems the weekend trek to Polokwane and other northern towns keep that stretch of the highway very busy on Fridays and Sundays.

We just arrived in time to spend an evening with our host, the acting operations manager for the hotel Rosa-Anne Naude-Potgieter, who we met at the Harvest Grill Restaurant for dinner.

We were soon tucking into our different meat-laden plates with our hosts having recommended a biltong and avocado topped rump steak that most at the table ordered.

With no large appetite for steak I opted for spare ribs but was soon left wondering if I was missing out as everyone eating the rump was loudly singing the chef's praises.

Normally I am not one to raise my hand for dessert, but as soon as we told our waitress that we would skip that, she insisted that the chef had already prepared a special treat for us.

With old-school Motown hits playing in the background, the waitress soon presented a big cake made up of mini puffed spongy round cakes filled with custard decorated with crystalised sugary toffee shavings.

If only my tummy was not full already, I would have easily eaten five of those.

The pastry chef came to the table to explain the elaborate dessert was called croquembouche and is usually served at weddings in France.

The Sun Carousel has 57 hotel rooms and the casino complex also offers rental and self-catering units at the adjacent Acacia Place which has 260 units.

The hotel is suitable for families looking for affordable accommodation and fun activities for the whole family.

Dinokeng game reserve where one can see the Big Five is a few kilometres away. The game drive, from 8am, was a pleasant experience.

I would recommend having a look at the hotel if you plan to visit the Carousel complex. Nkosi was hosted by Sun International.
