Taking diet advice from the most obese nation in the world is a fat lot of use‚ says Banting champion Tim Noakes.
Giving evidence on Friday at his Health Professions Council of South Africa misconduct hearing‚ Noakes said: “We take the American advice and they are the most obese nation in the world. It doesn’t make sense. It is like South Africa asking Bangladesh for advice about the game of rugby and not New Zealand.”
Noakes is accused by the Association of Dietetics of SA of unprofessional conduct after for providing “unconventional advice on breast-fed babies on social networks“.
He advised a mother on Twitter last year to wean her child onto a low-carbohydrate‚ high-fat diet.
Noakes told the panel the food industries pushing carbs and sugar were the cause of obesity‚ but they would deny it‚ and said the information he was giving at the hearing had not been provided “anywhere in the world“.
“The evidence I am presenting is a unique event in modern medicine. We deserve to be the first country in the world that can say it is time for us to take charge of our nation’s health and not to be dictated to by forces that have no interest in our health‚” he said.
He hoped people would not “shoot the messenger“.
“I just hope that people will ask why was Noakes was victimised for telling the truth‚” he said.
He also told the committee about the man who was behind the name of the Banting diet‚ 19th-century London undertaker William Banting.
“The Banting diet which we promote has been around since 1862. It has been discounted as a fad diet but it has stood the test of time. How can we discount this as unorthodox and fad?” he said.
