Pharmacist Blogger Niraj Naik breaks down the effects coke has on the human body.

Nearly two months after pharmacist Niraj Naik created a graphic timeline portraying the process of drinking Coke and the resulting ill effects on the body within one hour, the graphic has gone viral.

Naik says he created it in response to clients who complained they were still gaining weight despite following a low-fat diet.

The beverage wreaks havoc on the body, according to the graphic, releasing an excess of dopamine and leaving the individual dehydrated, sluggish, irritable and craving more.

The graphic explained:

In the first 10 minutes of drinking a330ml can of regular coke, the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar hits your system. Normally this amount of sugar would make a person vomit but the phosphoric acid in the coke cuts the sweet flavour allowing you to keep everything down.

By the time you reach 20 minutes your blood sugar level spikes resulting in an insulin burst which tells your liver to start turning any sugar it can get into fat.

After 40 minutes caffeine has absorbed into your body causing your pupils to dilate and increasing your blood pressure. Your liver responds by dumping more sugar into your bloodstream. At this point the receptors in your brain are blocked which prevents you from being drowsy.

At the 45 minute mark your body reacts physically the same way it would have if you were on heroin. Dopamine production is increased, stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain.

After an hour the phosphoric acid gives you a metabolism boost by binding the calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine which by the way is meant to be headed to your bones and teeth. Depriving your bones of these valuable vitamins, the caffeine’s diuretic properties kick in and you urinate all the bonded vitamins as well as sodium, electrolytes and water.

And to top it all off you then experience a sugar crash which leaves you irritable and tired.

All this happens after drinking one can of Coke. How many cans do you drink a day?

To prove Coke does not belong in the human body, collective-evolution.com

have come up with a few practical ways you can use Coke as a domestic cleaner:

  1. Remove grease stains and blood from clothing and fabric.
  2. Remove rust
  3. Clean oil stains from a garage floor and grout from tiles
  4. The acid kills slugs and snails
  5. Clean burnt pans and descale the kettle
  6. Clean car battery terminals by pouring a small amount of Coke over each one.
  7. Make money shine
  8. Remove gum from hair
  9. Remove stains from vitreous china
  10. You can remove (or fade) dye from hair by pouring diet Coke over it.
  11. Remove marker stains from carpet.
  12. Clean your toilet
  13. Strip paint off metal furniture

Experts challenge the facts of viral Coke graphic

Kimber Stanhope, Ph.D., RD,  says the statement made about the the sweetness of the coke making people want to vomit is not true.

“By far the majority of people have no trouble consuming 10 teaspoons of sugar-sweetened beverage. We have studied 100s of participants in our studies who consumed beverages that contained more than 10 teaspoons of sugar, but no phosphoric acid. Not one ever vomited due to the sweetness, and I don’t remember any of them ever reporting that they felt nauseated due to the sweetness.”

Stanhope also disagrees with the claim that your insulin levels go up, causing your liver to create fat.
