Whatever its origins, the Little Black Book has a bad reputation.
The book apparently contains a list of women whom men have decided will make their lives easier in the sex stakes because those women are said to be ready and willing to engage in a romp at any man's earliest convenience.
Some say the Little Back Book originated at World War I when Adolf Hitler and his Gestapo compiled a list of British perverts, presumably to spy on them and blackmail them to weaken the British forces at the time.
Another tale says the Little Black Book was the brainchild of an enterprising failed poet who compiled this list in the UK decades ago with the help of one of London's most famous pimps.
The author, Samuel Derrick, apparently dressed up the credentials of these ladies of the night and presented them as desirable escorts. The book, published in the 1700s, was a bestseller.
For decades though, no self-respecting woman would want to see her name in any rogue's black book. The mere mention of making an appearance in any database of your former lovers meant that the man regarded you as an easy lay and could knock on your door at 2am for a night of pleasure.
Though the tradition of the Little Black Book is outdated, as booty call has become commonplace, I often wonder if women had their own version of the book to record the kind of men who would feature. What kind of man would a girl list in he r black book that she'd want to reminisce about in her sunset years ?
Of course, there should be that one guy who got away. Life, as you know, happens to the best of us despite our good intentions. Sometimes true love shows itself at the most inopportune time and can find you not quite ready to step up to the podium.
In any girl's black book there should be that lover who taught you an important life lesson. He might not have been the one, but he might have taught you all you needed to know about being a determined yet compassionate business person because he once trusted you enough to share some of his trade secrets.
You know that had he not taken you into his confidence, mentored you through your earlier blunders, you would not have become the savvy businesswoman that you are today. You ought to be grateful because the old boys' club always guards these privileges.
Then there is that scoundrel of the male species whose tricks and lies taught you how to smell bulls**t from afar and distinguish the players from the real deal.
His bad-boy lifestyle taught you how to define your own worth and walk away from hell with your head held high. Because of his lesson, you will never tolerate such despicable behaviour from any man again.
The Little Black Book in this regard is not to be used to look up men who are willing to leave everything at the drop of a hat when you call, but it's all about those precious lessons in love that got you to where you are now.
