The most bizarre pregnancies

Pregnancy is that stage in life that is thrilling and magical.

But what happens when this memorable period in life turns nightmarish? Here, we spill the tea on the most bizarre pregnancies in the history of mankind that are sure to leave your jaw on the floor.

Youngest mom in history

Giving birth at the age of five years, seven months and 17 days, Lina Medina became the confirmed youngest mother in medical history in 1939 in Peru. Originally thought to have had a tumour, Lina's parents took her to a hospital complaining of her extreme abdominal growth. Doctors then determined that "the rabbit died" and she was in her seventh month of pregnancy. Lina gave birth to a healthy baby boy - Lina's son died at the age of 40 in 1979.

Doctors discovered that Lina had fully mature sexual organs as a result of precocious puberty. The identity of the father nor circumstances around the pregnancy was reportedly never revealed. However, Lina's father was arrested on suspicion of child sexual abuse, but was later released due to lack of evidence.

The man who got knocked up

In 2007, the world came to a standstill, when Thomas Beatie – a man – announced that he was with child. But how was all of this even possible? Well, before there was Bruce Jenner, there was Thomas Beatie.

Beatie was born female, but had gender reassignment surgery. Since he wanted to have biological kids, he kept his internal reproductive organs intact. Beatie then married one Nancy Gillespie, who was infertile, and he became pregnant with donated sperm. Subsequently, "The Pregnant Man" worldwide media headlines were born. Beatie has since had three kids between 2008 and 2010.

The mother who gave birth on a tree

When Mozambique suffered its worst floods in 50 years in 2000, 20-something-year-old Sofia Pedro showed that you should never underestimate the power of a woman. A heavily-pregnant Sofia had taken shelter on a tree, after raising floodwater had forced her out of her home. When a South African military helicopter arrived to rescue dozens of people who had taken refuge in the tree, they were alerted that Sofia was in labour. The child was born two minutes later on the tree. And we still have only three female presidents in Africa?

The 'Seventy is the new thirty' mom

In 2008, Indian woman Omkari Panwar proved that 70 is the new 30, after giving birth to twins – a boy and a girl –  at age 70 and breaking the record for the world's oldest mother. Omkari and her then 77-year-old husband had two grownup daughters, but were desperate for a heir. So they opted for the controversial move of undergoing IVF treatment.

The grandma who carried her grandkids

The year was 2008, there was an ongoing world financial recession, Apple introduced a new ultra-thin MacBook Air notebook, Hollywood was hit by a three-month long writers strike and grandma Jaci Dalenberg carried her own grandkids – triplets to be exact. Jaci's daughter Kim Coseno had trouble carrying a baby to terms, so her mother volunteered to play surrogate for her. You call it FOMO; Jaci calls it a remarkable display of a mother's love.
