Having a baby after 35

The high cost of childcare and the competitive job market is causing women to put off having children but is this a good thing?

More and more women are putting their careers first and choosing to have children later but how long can one leave it before it is too late?

Although medical advancement has made it possible for women to have healthy babies even after the age of 40, experts advice that women should try to have children before reaching 35.

According to babycentre.co.uk, ‘If you are aged 35 to 39, it could take you a couple of years to conceive’.

This could even take a year or two if not more.

Older moms are also at a higher risk of complications such as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, placenta praevia, pre-eclampsia and premature birth.

It is also more common for older mums to have a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy.

However it is not all doom and gloom for those planning to have babies at a later stage.

The chance of any of these pregnancy or labour complications happening is small.

Eating well, exercising regularly, not smoking and reducing alcohol intake are some of the steps one can take to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

More tips:

Get early and regular prenatal care

Take prenatal vitamins

Maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet

Gain the recommended amount of weight

Exercise regularly
