HuMOVE sex tracking platform wants to see how you move

It was only a matter of time before health tracking trickled into sex. An Italian research team has developed an accelerometer-based wearable system that's said to be comfortable and convenient for users.

What, oh what, could they be planning to do with such an item? The research team, led by Dr. Gastone Ciuti of the Biorobotics Institute, say they intend for doctors to use it as a diagnostic tool for sexual dysfunction for men and women, although at present it has only been used to test men.

"It's a very simple device," says Dr. Ciuti in an interview with Relaxnews. "It's the same size as a credit card and thanks to the storage capacity we have a record to work with if we want to conduct a follow up on how a drug may be working, for example."

Dr. Ciuti told Relaxnews that HuMOVE could easily de used for personalized sex tracking due to its simplicity and the platform is capable of quantifying the movements of sexual intercourse and storing the data.

"It's a prototype, so why not," he tells Relaxnews. "But out interest is in taking the parameters of movement during sexual intercourse and applying them in a clinical setting."

So it's entirely possible that sexual performance assessment -- as the paper refers to it -- could become personalized just like exercise and calorie consumption.

The platform has been tested on humans in a situation where sexual intercourse was simulated and the paper was published in the journal Urology.

Dr. Ciuti and his team believe their platform is the first of its kind, although technology advancements like 3D motion capture have made way for a new dimension in sexual sciences, exemplified most recently by a study at Waterloo University in Canada in which kinesiology researchers observed couples having sex in a variety of predetermined positions, studying pelvic thrusting and spine angle, to find out which ones are the best and worst in relation to back pain.

Pictures from the study reveal participants being hooked up to multiple machines and cords, so if HuMOVE minimalizes such items as promised, this could open the doors for a significant advancement in sexual science.
