Polo: more than a rich man’s game

The game of Polo has historically been classified as one for the rich and royal, however that has changed in the recent years.

In the last four years the Africa Cup has seen an increase in interest from the Urban African / Afropolitan market.

Celebrities such as Bridget Masinga-Khati, Khanyi Mbau, Tebogo Lerole and David Tlale are amongst those who have enjoyed the "Sport of Kings".

The event which takes place annually at the Inanda Club in Johannesburg is fast becoming one of the most popular on the Gauteng social calendar.

The Continental Polo Tournament takes place over 3 days (18 – 20 July) beginning with the knock-out challenges between invited African Teams, including South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Egypt and ending with an open that members of the public can attend.

The open day is where the celebrities and fashionistas come out to play.

Although the dress code is not as ‘outrageous’ as the Durban July, guests are encouraged to dress up in their Sunday best designer wear as they mingle and show support for their favourite teams in the Plate Finale.

The theme for this year is 'a touch of Gold'.

The polo event takes place at Inanda Club in Sandton from 18July until Sunday, 20th July.

On the Open Day, Sunday 20 July 2014, gates open at 10am with the plate finale at 3pm.

Tickets ranging from R150 to R20 000 for packages can be purchased at Computicket.
