SOME women have an obsession with looking good all the time, but smart clothes and make-up will not help them feel better.

So says motivational speaker and coordinator of The Black Lily Fashion and Beauty Expo, Charmaine Dlamini.

She says most women who are constantly "dolled-up" have other issues and thus they try to dress up to impress the opposite sex.

"I'm a dark-skinned woman and this used to be my biggest challenge because I failed to embrace it. I wore weaves and make-up all the time, thinking that that was what society wanted from me," she confesses.

The Black Lily Fashion and Beauty Expo aims to empower women to deal with such problems, but in a beautiful way.

As part of an on-going initiative by the Black Lily Africa Collective, the African Women Expo will take place this Saturday at the arts and culture hub in Moroka, Soweto.

"The expo will focus mainly on outer and inner beauty. Beyond make-up and styling, we want women to understand how they feel about themselves as individuals and how confident are they about who they really are," Dlamini says.

The motivational event will also include a brief history of the famousWalter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, Soweto.

"This part of the expo is just to remind ourselves of where we come from as women in this country. Hopefully, this will inspire all our journeys," Dlamini says.

Also on the exciting programme are fashion showcases that are produced by designers from Soweto as well as a variety of beauty products.

Make-up workshops, motivational talks on identity and self-confidence and live music and performances are some of the activities that guests can look forward to.

Another important aspect of the event is the opportunity for guests to network with the designers, stylists, artists in different sectors, events managers and entrepreneurs.

l Tickets for this unusual expo will be available at a cost of R120 at the door. Food, refreshments and a goodie bag are inclusive in the price.

The expo will be open from 10am until late. - monnakgotlam@sowetan.co.za
