LIVELY: Loyiso Mdebuka
LIVELY: Loyiso Mdebuka

HE IS known for his loud laughter and fascinating persona on the daily youth magazine show Hectic Nine9 on SABC2.

With his exuberant nature, it's not surprising that Loyiso Mdebuka aka DJ Loyd has chosen a career on TV. Born and bred in Cape Town, the 26-year-old is a presenter, DJ and voice-over artist and is enjoying the limelight.

Loyiso released his first album with house DJ Euphonik called Phuture DJs Vol.1 in 2010. Since then he has also worked as a radio DJ for Goodhope FM, presenting a weekend drive-time show called The Freakin' Weekend.

Early this year, he was voted as part of Markham League's Top 10 most influential young personalities.

Who is Loyiso?

I am a young entrepreneur. I call myself a Jack of all trades and I'm an entertainer.

What makes you different from the rest?

I am not one-dimensional, my work shows and I am a young person with a dream to change mindsets.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Gugulethu and my family later moved to Khayelitsha. My parents divorced when I was eight years old. Then I went on to live with my mother in Khayelitsha. It wasn't as easy as it was when I had both parents.

What ambitions did you have as a child?

My father was a role model. He worked in the corporate industry. I wanted to be just like him but did not have a clear vision of a career choice I wanted in corporate.

Describe yourself in three words.

Driven, resourceful and multi-talented.

What keeps you motivated?

I love seeing people who come from nowhere become somebody by overcoming their obstacles.

What are the three things you cannot live without?

Without a doubt, it's my DJ bag, laptop and my family.

When did you start Hectic Nine 9?

I started in May 2009. It was nerve-wracking. I wanted to be in the TV industry but never thought of starting off with a live TV show. But I am glad I started that way because it allowed me to be myself.

What are your highlights of the show?

Meeting Graeme Smith in Khayelitsha for one of his projects to promote cricket in the townships.

Who would you like to interview on the show?

Kanye West, Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki. I love their spirits and humility. They make a difference in our lives and I'd like to have an insight into how they think.
