Soak up some street credibility

DUBBED Africa's "number one urban youth culture and lifestyle event", STR.CRD has returned for its third annual instalment in downtown Johannesburg.

UNIQUE FESTIVAL: A young crowd gathers to celebrate Jozi's diverse urban sub-cultures.

The youth culture showcase will be held at Johannesburg's Maboneng Precinct from September 27 to 30. More than just a party and booze spree, STR.CRD - derived  from the phrase "street credibility" - brings great minds to the country to share their recipe for success with talented, ambitious locals in the form of mentoring sessions and workshops in a language understood by the youth.

Founder Hardy McQueen said: "STR.CRD is a celebration of urban culture. It aims to create a platform for all the sub-genres within the culture to grow and create sustainability among its practitioners. "

The precinct is bordered by Main, Albrecht, Market and Berea streets on the east side of Johannesburg.

"No other culturally diverse (event) like this currently exists in the country. We have some of the best music festivals in South Africa, but nothing that looks to influence and grow the urban culture space," said McQueen.

With an expected attendance of 4000, the festival has no age limit and plenty of entertainment for under-18s. The festival attracts a large number of young patrons and there is the risk that exhibiting stalls might sell alcohol to under-age kids.

However, McQueen stressed that "all alcohol is sold in designated zones that allow no under-18 access. We have zero tolerance for drugs and criminality".

If last year's event was anything to go by, an explosion of colour, energy and the latest trends will yet again grace the artistic space of Maboneng Precinct.

This is an opportunity to mix and mingle with fashion, music, dance, skaters and BMX rider enthusiasts, as well as graffiti artists and photographers, all of whom will showcase the talent.

Extreme fashion is the order of the day at STR.CRD.    From animal prints to custom-designed sneakers, a parade of performances and pictures will dominate.

International artists for this year's event include Just A Band and Jesse Boykins III, while local acts are still to be confirmed. -   monnakgotlam@sowetan.co.za
