Jozi inspires Masemola

Galleries, cultures, the works

WARREN Masemola sure knows how to light up a room and is always as busy as a bee.

He rode to our offices in full cycle gear, explaining that he is preparing for the upcoming Momentum Highveld 94.7 Cycling Competition.

Most people know him from his latest role in Ses' Top La where he plays the gay Thokozani "Thoko" Chanel on SABC1 on Fridays at 7pm.

His previous roles include stints in Intersexions, Scandal, Isidingo and The Philanthropist.

Ever curious, Masemola is learning sign language as he already speaks 9 of the 11 official languages. He is also working on a movie.

The Pretoria-born actor says he always makes the best of work and play and finds the bustling streets of Johannesburg, his home, inspiring.

What do you like about Johannesburg?

All the galleries I love, such as Johannesburg Art Gallery and Wits Gallery, are in Johannesburg.

I like the recreation centres; the synergy of the different cultures which adds to the buzz of the city. I like the cold weather more than the summers. I also love the hills that provide a great altitude and remind me of Durban.

Your favourite B&B or hotel in Johannesburg?

Park Hyatt Hotel in Rosebank. It is five star, but I would definitely rate it six star. They provide transport from the airport, which I look forward to after my travels.

What makes Johannesburg great to you?

The public transport which is an amalgamation of Gautrain, the BRT and Metrobus, except the taxis (he nods in disapproval).

Where do you chill with your friends in Johannesburg?

The Newtown Park or in Alexandra township when I feel like eating cattle head meat and mogodu (tripe) or when I feel like conversing with Pedi people. The township has a huge population of Pedi people.

Where is your favourite shisanyama in Johannesburg?

I don't do shisanyamas, you get sunburnt and SPh30 sunscreen is quite expensive, so no. (rolling his eyes).

Where would you entertain a tourist and why?

I would take them to Ivory Park because of the vast showcase of the Pedi culture through dance, food and the public soccer screenings.

What do you see Johannesburg looking like in the future?

I see my city having bicycle and motorcycle lanes for safety purposes. Cheaper public transport fares and no selling at robots please.

What's your favourite place for a good-quality meal with your family in Johannesburg?

Gramadoelas at the Market Theatre. I was there two weeks ago.

I also love Bismillah's Restaurant and Take-aways in Fordsburg. They sell the best Indian food. You must try the mutton korma (he mimics an Indian accent).

Where do you go shopping?

Eastgate Mall. I have been shopping there for the past 10 years. I got my first body piercing there and fell in love with the place. Come to think of it, I bought all my furniture there (laughs).

Where can you find the best beer?

Calkboard Cafe in Main Street Life because they have a variety of national and international beers. You can get German beer, Irish beer ... every beer actually.

Which is the best place for an all-night party?

Bassline in Newtown on any Thursday for the African Storm Sound System with Admiral and Jah Seed. This is a movement of dancehall and reggae tunes and has been happening there for the past 20 years or so.

Where can you find the best spa treatment?

Khai Thai Spa in Parkhurst. It offers the Garra fish pedicure and has the best sportsmen massages.
