Young designers to wow at Soweto Fashion Week

SOWETO will turn into a rich fashion lode when young designers wow visitors the Soweto Fashion Week this month.

The event, taking place from May 24 to 26 at the Soweto Hotel, Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, Soweto, will feature a "surprise" opening ceremony of more than 15 designers on all three days.

Show founder Stephen Manzini says one designer will win a design and construction bursary .

"The South African fashion industry is tough to crack without resources. Most of these designers have had to do with minimal equipment and almost zero budgets .

"Educating oneself further while trying to make money in a career that requires many hand-hours is hard. Support for these designers is a definite necessity," Manzini says.

Support has come from InScape Design, which will give a half bursary to the value of R11500 for a design and construction course. Gepardissima, a jewellery company, will sponsor the jewellery that the models will wear.

"Our vision is to see the designers grow. We know how hard it is to survive in this industry without capital, but we have faith that one day these designers will showcase on international platforms without having to worry about resources, especially financial resources," Manzini says.

Soweto Fashion Week tickets are available at the door and at Computicket for R40.
