New head for HIV society

THE Southern African HIV Clinicians Society has appointed a new president, Dr Francesca Conradie.

Conradie is an HIV and TB adviser at Right to Care, the country's largest non-governmental ARV treatment organisation.

Right to Care has more than 120000 patients on ARV therapy. Other than adult HIV, the organisation also runs paediatric HIV, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, TB, cervical cancer, medical male circumcision, and HIV counselling and testing programmes.

Conradie is well known in HIV research, treatment, and preventions circles for her commitment to combat both HIV and TB.

At the HIV Clinicians Society, Conradie takes over from outgoing president Prof Francois Venter. Commenting on her appointment, Conradie said: "Francois did a fantastic job. I have big shoes to fill. In keeping with Prof Venter's legacy, I would like to underscore that the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society will continue its commitment to help the South African Department of Health to achieve the goals of the National Strategic Plan for HIV, STIs and TB for 2012 to 2016."
