Weight good for pregnancy
GAINING weight during pregnancy is expected, but appropriate weight gain can decrease the risk of complications during pregnancy.
The Association for Dietetics in South Africa (Adsa) says the composition of a woman's diet before, during and after pregnancy might influence the pregnancy, the delivery and the health of the mother and child.
The association advises women who plan to fall pregnant or who are pregnant to consult a registered dietitian to assess their nutrient needs and identify eating plans to meet these needs.
"The key components of a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy include appropriate weight gain, appropriate physical activity and enjoying a variety of foods," Berna Harmse, president of Adsa, says.
"When women choose to eat all kinds of junk foods then they run the risk of starving their unborn babies of the nutrients they need to grow healthily," dietician Carol Browne says.
On the one hand, not gaining enough weight during pregnancy means the unborn baby will not grow to its fullest potential and might have developmental problems after birth, Browne says.

Gaining reasonable weight is what should be the goal. Some women just over do it.Report Abuse

Different strokes for different folks
Some people overdo the "Im eating for two phrase". A child's developmental problems are NOT necesasrilly caused by diet, there are other factors. Eg, down syndrome is not due to diet but chromosomes.
I ate very healthy and exercised. Had a problem fr*ee pregancy but my baby was born with weak stomach muscles (which affects her balance) and has to go for physiotheraphy. She is a year and 3 months old (she started crawling a month ago, is learning how to stand and walk). This was/is not caused by all the "bad food" I ate but mother nature does her own thing. That is when all the questions start......... why, what have I done, could I have prevented this.........
On the one hand you find people who drink and dont care hoots about their unborn babies and they deliver healthy babies........... with no DEVELOPMENTAL PROBLEMS
