Colour, glamour at the Cape Met - PHOTOS

This year's theme, Make a Difference, gave the fashion conscious a big headache because it "challenged them to think out of the box"

CELEBRITIES turned out in numbers to add colour and glamour to the J&B Met in Cape Town.

The J&B Met, one of the biggest races in Africa, was held at the Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday.

The race was won by punters' favourite Igugu, ridden by Anthony Delpech.

A couple wearing Jalena Jablanovic's designs won the Most Elegant Couple tittle.

The event attracted party animals from all over South Africa, who came specifically for the after-race parties.

This year's theme, Make a Difference, gave the fashion conscious a big headache because it "challenged them to think out of the box".

Dominant colours on the day included red, royal blue, peach and green.

Colourful suits, nice body-hugging frocks, dresses, multi-layered lace dresses and hats were this year's favourite fashion accessories.

Celebrities who at least adhered to this year's theme included Isidingo actress Kgomotso Christopher, Jennifer Sue, Zandile Nkonyeni and Somizi Mhlongo.

But not everything was great at this year's J&B Met. There seemed to be a lack of creativity among some of the fashion designers.

Some patrons came in tatty jeans, others in evening dresses, soccer T-shirts and too tight and revealing get-ups.

Women dominated the event with some of the finest and most unique dresses, while men generally were a huge disappointment.

Mhlongo, who was dressed by David Tlale, came in a snow-white outfit made of feathers.

He told Sowetan he was disappointed that men did not make an effort to follow this year's theme.

"Most men came dressed as if they were going to a wedding or a funeral.

"How can you wear a suit at such an event? The J&B Met give individuals the freedom to be creative," he said.

Uyanda Mbuli, Bonang Matheba and Joanne Strauss, as well as YFM twins Hlelo and Ntando Masina, attracted curious onlookers with their eye-catching outfits.
