That African taste

SANZA Fakudze, former YFM breakfast show host, is now cooking up a storm in his Yeoville, Joburg, eatery.

Living quietly for three years after leaving the popular Harambee show, Sanza re-emerged in December last year as owner of Eat Arabi, Eat the World.

The tiny eatery quickly became a hit with food lovers. It now attracts Yeoville residents, mainly foreigners from the African continent, as well as middle-class South Africans living in the Johannesburg suburbs and who hanker after the vibrant Yeoville lifestyle of years gone by.

"I have observed the eating habits of Yeoville residents who frequently patronise eateries serving food from their home countries.

"I learnt from their chefs and then fused the cuisine to come up with something for everyone. I serve almost all types of African food here, including South African dishes," Sanza said.

Named after the late impresario and music promoter, Arabi Mucheke, Sanza's mentor, the eatery is simply called Arabi's Kitchen for short by patrons.

It is situated on the legendary Rockey Street, just below the equally famous Tandoor Nightclub.

Granted, the place has become a no-go area for certain people and yet, in equal measure, Yeoville is the one success story of our time with regards to integration.

Locals and foreigners from various parts of the African continent have made this area their home, living side by side in harmony with their neighbours.

"I am creating a new vibe, a new culture that harnesses the energy and the Afrocentric culture of Yeoville through food," Sanza said.

The eatery serves Congolese, Nigerian, Zimbabwean, Ethiopian, South African, Indian and Thai dishes.

Sanza has even hired a Bangladeshi chef to cook delicious, hot curries for his customers.

"When I opened this kitchen, which also bakes health bread on the premises, I didn't even have a business plan," Sanza said.

" I came across this space and went straight into business because I am passionate about cooking.

"We serve all sorts of special dishes here, including vegetarian. Our customers are artists, writers, journalists and even people who live in the suburbs .

"After scouring the suburbs for good food, they end up driving here for a good bite. Even Yeoville's street chefs eat here."

Besides running his now popular eatery Sanza is a producer for Big Brother Africa at M-Net.
