What's hot for 2012

Dec 30, 2011 | Zenoyise Madikwa | 19 comments

THE word is out that people are going to up their game in terms of fashion in 2012. And that applies to all fashion fundis not only the upper class and celebrities, say the fashion gurus. Sowetan has done all the legwork for you to find out what's going to be hot in 2012.

Weaves, strands and lace front wigs will be hot in 2012

Fashion

According to fashion and beauty editor, Alexis Tshangana we will see lots and lots of colour and low-key silhouettes.

"The 60s and 80s crop shorts, smaller short skirts, cropped jacket, wedges - in different colours - and sandals are in and they will be more creative and colourful.

"Big, chunky bags have also taken over, straw bags are coming back and hippy tops and dresses are back."

She adds that the floral trend continues this season.

Accessories

Tshangana says pendant necklaces are hot and accessories are chunky.

She says Victoria Beckham and Ray Ban sunglasses are in and add instant polish to everything from denim shorts to ladylike shift dresses. She says headgear will also be big.

People will still see lots and lots of bows, flowers and alice bands.

Hair

Weaves, strands and lace front wigs will be hot in 2012, according to Gavin Stollar, owner of Diva Divine, a leading international brand in virgin hair extensions and wigs.

"Weaves are sewn into your own natural plaited hair. Strands are keratin extensions attached individually to one's natural hair.

"Lace front wigs are either glued or taped to one's natural hairline."

He says Indian, Malaysian and Brazilian hair will be popular as well as the introduction into the market of Vietnamese and Mongolian hair extensions.

He says feather extensions are growing in popularity and will be popular hair accessories in 2012.

Straight, curly, Jackson Wave, deep Wave jerry curl and relaxed texture will all be popular in 2012.

Wigs

Stollar says the lace front wig is still a hot accessory.

He says celebrities like Beyoncé and Tyra Banks, who both love wearing lace front wigs are people to look up to when it comes to this style.

Virgin Indian Remy lace front wigs will always be the most popular as it is of the highest quality, he says.

Both full lace front wigs as well as partial lace with an elastic stretch strap will be popular in 2012.

Dry curls

This is a very hot trend according to Vuyo Varoyi, a Johannesburg based make-up artist.

"People are going back to basics and dry curls will be part of this look.

" Dry curls can be trimmed on the sides. This hairstyle is sportted by Dineo Ranaka and it is hot."

Make-up

Varoyi says the natural make-up look with beautiful skin is in.

"The skin is flawless but natural. A light foundation that enhances the skin is a key beauty product for this year.

"People appreciate who they are and embrace what they have. HD (High Definition) cameras have also had an influence in this trend. Make-up artists have had to take it easy on make-up because of HD cameras."

He says coral colours like oranges, peaches, and reds that were influenced by colour-blocking were in.

False lashes are still in, but they won't be worn very thick, he says.

"People will use lashes at the top and bottom of the eyelid to enhance this look. People will do away with wearing too much eyeshadow - and blush is out!"

If one has to be materialistic , then disguises and foreign hair are out and better shape between knee and ankles is in . As far as the disguises are concerned - there is nothing less appealing than this straight hair that stands still in a howling gale . I note on TV these days there are black models who are not Polynesian nor Indian , advertising lightweight , bouncy hair and a product which does this .

Calves - look I'm not advocating the powerful calves of one who could kick start a jumbo jet , but it is rather conspicuous that almost every black model has nothing but a pencil shape from knee to ankle as opposed to competitors who have a gentle curve in the same places . Okes like Dion Chang's fashions of 2/3 or 3/4 pants or mini dresses for women , would be far more appealing when worn on a slightly curvaceous leg , rather than a straight , shapeless skin covered , bone .

Whats hot for 2012 is for women to leave these weaves as they no longer have hair lines. Go back to basic beauty!!! NO fake nails, make-up, eyelashes and weaves.

It feels so good to see a woman confidently executing any of the looks described above. Whether she's an upper-middle class lady whooshing past in a Range Rover. Or an up-and-coming lady strutting on the pavement on the way to work in the morning.

Big ups ladies, you all rock! Bring on a female resident!
