Fashions set to run wild at Durban July

This year's theme is "A Right Royal Affair"

PULL out your most fabulous outfit from your closet and throw on mom's pearls. Add a brooch or divine sash detail and spend your money on a great hat - because this year's theme at the spectacular Durban July is all about royal affairs.

The theme is inspired by the two royal weddings this year: the English royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton that became the centre of attraction on April 29, and of course the forthcoming wedding between 33-year-old South African swimmer Charlene Lynette Wittstock to Albert II, the sovereign prince of Monaco.

The race day will coincide with the two-day royal wedding on July 1 and 2, which will be public holidays in Monaco. Other events surrounding the wedding include an appearance on the balcony, a buffet cocktail in the Palace Square and a gala concert after the civil ceremony. A ball and fireworks display will follow the religious ceremony.

The Durban July, which takes place at Greyville Racecourse on the first Saturday of July each year, draws thousands of fashion lovers, designers, celebrities, politicians and horse-racing fans from around the country.

Fashion experts say this year's theme: "A Right Royal Affair", emulates opulence and class, while allowing room for varied interpretations.

Durban designer Kathrin Kidger believes this year's theme is thought-provoking.
