Masondo makes fashion sense

THANDI Masondo is one mighty package. She is a mother, a wife, a savvy businesswoman and an emerging authority on forward-minded fashion.

Her eclectic selections from edgy Brazil and Hong Kong and local talent, which she buys for her Fashion Studio Collections boutique at The Zone in Rosebank, have made her a force to be reckoned with in fashion circles.

Choosing items by feel, Masondo gravitates to sophisticated design over "in" colours or patterns.

"When customers come back to my designer clothing boutique because they love the way I dress them, that is the ultimate compliment," Masondo says.

"I love making a woman feel good about herself with a great outfit. Even for myself, when I feel good, I stand taller, smile broader and feel more powerful. That's what I aim to do for my customers every day."

For seven years in business her high-end boutique has been known as the first stop for celebrities looking for ladies' cocktail and evening wear. And what a bunch they are. Among them are Basetsana Kumalo, Sonia Sedibe, Pabi Moloi and Lerato Moloi.

What makes boutiques special?

Masondo says the personal touch is very vital to the success of any boutique.

"You need a very savvy taste - from the layout of your store to what you source for your clients, from clothing to shoes and accessories. Another important aspect is that you need to be hands-on and have the ability to understand the market you are buying for.

Advice for those who want to start this kind of business

Masondo says the first step in owning any successful business is education.

"A person doesn't have to have a doctorate in small business management in order to own and run a successful boutique.

"The more information the potential boutique owner arms herself with before starting the boutique, the more likely she will be to turn a profit and stay in business."

She says if a person is interested in becoming a boutique owner she has to have a grasp of the fashion industry.

"You need to be able to determine what types of fashion will sell in the area where the boutique is located. Some fashion designs, while beautiful, simply won't sell in certain parts of the world."

Her unique winning formula

Masondo says her love of working with people and her love of selling forms her winning formula.

"If you love what you are selling the job will come easily. Retail is a patient business," she says.

"Retail is is a tough business with only 30percent glamour while the rest is hard work. I do it because I love it but I think there are easier ways to make money. But I would not trade selling beautiful clothing to appreciative customers for anything.

"In addition, it takes time to build a customer base for your store or designer clothing boutique."
