Tlale to 'go big' at Fashion Week

AWARD-WINNING designer David Tlale is taking the "go big or go home" dictum to another level at this year's Joburg Fashion Week.

After a show that attracted thousands of his followers at Circa Art Gallery last year, Tlale has upped his game.

This time the fashion ace, one of the big names exhibiting - from February 15 to 19 - will have his show at the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Braamfontein.

The show will feature 92 models, one for every year former president Nelson Mandela has lived.

With the theme "Made in the City", Tlale added that the show would blow the mind of everyone present.

"There are a lot of surprises in store. We will have chairs and the ramp right at the epicentre of the bridge. Since we are celebrating the city, the show will depict what the city is all about.

"It will reflect the lives of the people who work and live in Joburg."

Tlale has collaborated with Anglo Platinum. He says the aim of doing the show in the city is to get rid of the crime stigma that is attached to Jozi.

Tlale, who recently moved his studio to Braamfontein, said the idea came about while he was driving over the bridge one evening.

He said it looked so beautiful with its dazzling lights that he could visualise a beautiful fashion show with hundreds of fashion lovers cheering on.

"After the previous show with the orchestra and all, I had to up my game. I had to come up with something that would not only beat the previous experience but leave a lasting impression on people," he said.

The show, at 10.30pm on February 19, is by invitation only. A few tickets are on sale.

The bridge will be closed on both sides and only those with accreditation will be allowed in.
