Spring hair is so natural

Sep 2, 2010 | Zenoyise Madikwa | 26 comments

THIS spring is for funky, free form and edgy hair trends. So says Gavin Stollar, chief executive of Diva Divine Hair, a hip virgin hair extension and wig brand.

Stollar says this season women are expressing themselves more with artistic and creative hairstyles.

He adds that there is a slight shift from weaves to strand-by-strand hair and lace-front wigs.

Strand-by-strand application looks more natural and is easier to style as opposed to weaves that have to be set in a certain way.

Most celebrities who have hair extensions choose the strand-by-strand method. Prices are slightly more expensive than a hair-track application, but it is considered well worth the additional cost.

"A lot of women are finding it easy to manage as it can be washed, blow dried and straightened daily without having to worry about tangling and matting," Stollar says.

"The hair is available in various styles and made from 100percent pure Indian Remy hair with the cuticles (roots) still intact and facing the same direction. This ensures the hair is tangle free with no shedding.

"It is so soft to the touch that no one will suspect it is not your own hair. It has a two-year life span.

"The Brazilian range, which comes only in weft, has only three to six months' life span, depending on one's lifestyle," Stollar says.

He says the lace front wig is the hair to wear this spring. It is fairly expensive because it is Indian Remy hair, but because of its customised and realistic appearance, it is very popular with local and international celebrities.

"This is the wig worn by Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Tyra Banks. It does for many celebrities what most ordinary wigs do not. It looks realistic and can last a lifetime with proper care. It starts from R6500 to R8500.

"Top local celebrities buy the wig and they never return to weaves. Celebs such as Pam Andrews, Bonang Matheba, Lerato Kganyago and Primrose Crous are a few who have fallen for it," says Stollar.

It is a high-quality brand of human hair. The front has a faux "hairline", which is fixed to the head with an adhesive. This makes the hair of the wig appear to be growing from the scalp and does not destroy the hairline.

What's hot and what's not this spring?

"There is a big demand for Straight and Jackson Weaves from retailers and our clients," says Stollar.

What's passé?

Stollar says a lot of people are moving away from Chinese hair.

"The ethnic market has been bombarded with Chinese hair. Unlike Brazilian and Indian hair, Chinese hair is a mixture of horse hair, mono fibre and some elements of human hair. It is covered with silicone and looks nice and shiny, but after it is washed it tangles and mats," he says.

What are the different styles?

"The Mohawk is big. It was seen at the recent Fashion Week ramps of various designers. Its most important quality is that it gives an instant jazz to long and medium hair. It gives a punk look and is also chic and sophisticated. It looks good on teenagers and early-20s women. Middle-aged and old women should stay away from this hairdo," Stollar says.

"Shaved heads with funky cuts such as Rihanna's Mohawk and Cassie's half-shaved one-side-long hair rock star look are hot.

"Layered sassy cuts with asymmetrical bangs and layered cuts are still hot, but are just getting shorter. Halle Berry, Janet Jackson and Regina King are wearing their hair short and cropped in sassy layers, very cute," he says.

"Celebs like Raven Symone are keeping to extreme angles and freely chopped blunt edges. And shaved cutout designs are showing up more," Stollar says.

@Glenda,
I'm tired of straightening my hair - for the whole of this year I've been on an Afrohair - it's huge and very nice but when I need a change I put a weave on it and looks great indeed.
