Baby Cele defends part of man abuser
SEASONED actress Baby Cele, who has landed the role in which she portrays the life of a man abuser - ironically during Women's Month - says the play is relevant and educational.
Cele portrays the character of Mary, a man abuser and an unfaithful woman in a play that opens on Wednesday at the Windybrow Theatre in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.
Written and directed by Julian Seleke Mokoto, the play seems to be fighting against the currency and spirit of Women's Month. But both the director and star of the show insist Unfaithful Woman is relevant for the same reason that this is Women's Month.
"We want people to know that, yes, we have rights, but that does not give us reason to trample on the rights of men.
"We need to respect the fact that a husband is the head of the family who also has his role and responsibility to play in a relationship," Cele said.
The same view is held by Mokoto, who vehemently defended the play.
"I wanted to let people know that there are women who abuse their husbands in the name of rights.
"In this case Mary, who was sent to school, paid for by her uneducated husband, turns against him, disrespects him by cheating on him with a police officer. The husband finds them in bed, and shoots them, killing the boyfriend, while the wife survives, but is left crippled.
"This is a lesson to cheating women," said Mokoto.
