If only DJ Leko can stop his silly jokes

Sep 3, 2010 | Simon Nare | 5 comments

A WISE man always changes his mind, they say. It happened to me twice after days of listening to Metro FM's Leko Ngcobo's afternoon shows during weekdays.

At first, I was impressed with the way he handles his show. This was when he was first introduced to the largest commercial station last year where he co-hosted with Penny Lebyane.

Then I thought he was too excited to be on Metro FM. I had been informed that he was a big hit in the Banana City, where he was a host on some local station. I also believed that there was no chemistry between him and the Phly One.

For a couple of days I thought he was actually handling his afternoon show alone impressively.

Unlike many radio presenters who like to hear their voices, Ngcobo did not yap unnecessarily. He spoke only when it was necessary, which is commendable.

And unlike some presenters, he also has the voice for radio. If only he didn't make stupid jokes and laughed at his own jokes, his was gonna be a perfect show.

One poke at Mercedes-Benz went something like: Most Eccentric Rich Capitalists Enjoy Driving Expensive Sedans. I remember when I was still at primary this was what we used to coin when we were bored. So for me, hearing this on national radio was torturous to my ears.

I am not even going to mention the name of the show, Lunch with Leko. Whoever came up with that name should be given the boot because it almost sounds like a talk show, whereas it is a music programme.

Even though he plays mostly American junk, I found myself enjoying his music. I mean credit must be given where it is due.

The show producers could do with some brainy individuals who would come up with topical issues.

And then I made the mistake of checking Ngcobo up on the station's website. At first I thought I was looking at Generations' Khapela and by no means do I think the actor doesn't have good looks.

No offence, but I didn't like what I was looking at. And I must not be mistaken for a gay because I am as straight as they come and I am not homophobic.

It's not fair to not like people because of how they look but then good looks also make it easier to like a person. I don't subscribe to the saying that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Maybe it was the picture that turned me off. Maybe they should have posted a picture of him smiling.

I regretted looking at the picture because I actually thought he has improved immensely as a radio presenter but because of his looks I changed my mind. Otherwise, I will tune in on his show from time to time and maybe I will forget about his looks.
