FreshlyGround's star's new look

Sep 3, 2010 | Simon Nare | 19 comments

GET ready to appreciate the new-look Freshlyground lead singer Zolani Mahola. Much has been said about the singer's dress sense and it appears she has heeded the advice to spruce up her look.

Mahola laughs heartily when I put it to her that people were not too complimentary about how she dresses.

"I am not aware of people talking about my dress sense.

"It's terrible if that is what they are saying but it is okay. I dress the way I like but I have started working with a fashion designer who will be responsible for my look.

"I met him during rehearsals for the World Cup gigs," Mahola says.

More worryingly, Mahola divulged that she will be going for "not so clean" clothes.

"I like his style but it is not too clean. How can I put it? It is kind of messy. I normally don't like dressing up but sometimes I do. Yes, I also don't like putting on shoes but lately I have been wearing shoes. I am also starting to do weird things with my hair."

So it will be interesting to see what Mahola will be wearing during her one-hander show in Cape Town and at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg.

It's her first show in years. The last time she featured in a play was when she was studying drama at the University of Cape Town.

So how was the play conceived?

"A friend of mine approached me and told me he wanted to write a play for me.

"He asked me what I would like to explore in the play and I told him that we have to tackle abuse and political issues."

In the play Mahola plays the role of an interpreter at a hospital that admits mainly French-speaking refugees. She gets entangled in their predicament as they seek help at the institution.

"It is a teaser for now to see if people will like it. If they do it will tour the world. I am confident people will like it because it deals with political issues that are universal."

Well-known for her velvety voice as lead vocalist of the widely travelled Freshlyground, Mahola has landed her first theatre reading of While We're Not Apart, a play written for her by French writer Eudes Panel.

The play explores a feminine, brave and humane perspective of the challenges faced by the health system of a "southern country".

The play also explores the male dominance of the world and invites the audience to think differently about the feminine alternative.

The panel reminds the audience of the constant possibility of forgiveness, love and the gift of life in a style of writing reminiscent of American writer Phillip Roth.

The play was staged at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town on August 22 before an invitational reading at the Market Theatre.

Though this was the popular songstress' first script reading, she is no stranger to acting.

She has starred in the isiXhosa drama series Tsha Tsha, which aired on SABC1.

So how is she going to juggle her band performances and the show if it goes ahead?

"It's going to be a challenge but I am ready for it."
