Generations is top shayela amongst Mzansi soapies

Drama-filled soapie, Generations, has proven that 20 years later, it is still the best weekday story to catch in the evening.

According to the television measurement survey conducted by SAARF, more than 7 million people tune in to watch SABC 1’s soap opera.

SABC2’s Muvhango soapie came second with a rating of 5.8 million viewers, whilst Isidingo, Rhythm City and Scandal clocked in with less than five million.

Award winning newbie drama series, Isibaya, with less than a year introduced to Mzansi Magic has managed to get a viewership of less than one million.

Isibaya, after walking away with three honours at the South African Film Awards, and 10 kudos at the first Royalty Soapie Awards prove that the soapie has the potential to still grow in numbers.

Television analyst Tashi Tagg said Generations stays winning because it has become part of people’s lifestyle.

It is considered as the Days of our Lives of South Africa.

“It is part of their lives, and people like the fact that it does not change its time slot. They have developed relationships with the characters.”
