Team Mosha sets dance floor on fire

Mantshane Malala and Mpho Talana are Team Mosha.
Mantshane Malala and Mpho Talana are Team Mosha.

They took the music industry by surprise when their hit single Sofa Silahlane whipped revellers into a frenzy, now Team Mosha says there is more from where it came from.

The pair from Mamelodi outside Pretoria trended on social media for all the right reasons when Sofa Silahlane was released two weeks ago. So impactful was the song's debut that they are convinced it will be this festive season's anthem.

Team Mosha is made up of Mpho "Shuffle Muzik" Talana and Mantshane "Khumo MRD" Malala. They have been making music together for less than a year after courting each other.

Their name is taken from the local saying "mosha", which they say means to have a good time or change the ambience of a place of recreation.

In actual fact, Sofa Silahlane has been doing the rounds, landing a spot on a few mixes on popular radio stations after its initial release in and around Pretoria townships and suburbs.

The duo knew that they struck gold and that Sofa Silahlane deserved a bigger platform to be enjoyed by everybody. Their attempts to land a recording deal landed them at independent label Open Mic, which made them an offer.

Talana, who also runs a chesanyama, says the song is meant to be a party song to fuel wild summer nights. But other music lovers have identified it as a love song.

Malala is a vocalist, following on the footsteps of her mother Maya Nkosi who backed 1980s greats like Kamazu, Senyaka and Brenda.

Talana, who played for Kaizer Chiefs juniors, is behind the production. They have already recorded Senya Retla Patela, which earned them cult following in Pretoria since they got together in December last year.

Coming from Mamelodi, the duo still hold on to their jazz influences while they follow today's trend of thumping dance. They have recorded 12 songs for their album.
