Shaka Sisulu says he will work on establishing a more cordial relationship with the mother of his child.

The charismatic grandson of Struggle icons Walter and Albertina Sisulu found himself in a firestorm after news surfaced that he had assaulted Lerato Sedi, his baby mama.

"I don't wish to make a comment about any discussions about a possible reconciliation but would like to emphasise that I would always prefer a cordial relationship because we have a child that we have to raise together and his interests must always come first," he said yesterday.

His family fired a statement in which they said they were shocked and dismayed at Shaka's conduct.

"As a family, and as our parents Walter and Albertina would have done, we condemn in the strongest possible terms any violence against women - and violence in general as a means of settling disputes.

"These alleged actions are completely at odds with the values that we as a family hold dear."

Shaka said his relationship with Sedi ended two years ago and they had a cordial relationship until the bust-up last week.

Shaka, who is an entrepreneur and television personality, appeared in the Randburg Magistrate's court on Friday for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. He, however, denied the charge.

"In a statement, the mother of my child claimed that I pushed her against a door. I deny this claim," he said.

Sedi didn't respond to repeated attempts to solicit a comment from her.
