How 'Chasing Chairs' keeps Mhende fresh

Generations: The Legacy star Chi Mhende has gone back to theatre.

Known for her transgender role as Wandile, she returns to the stage with a two-hander play called Chasing Chairs, which opens at the Market Theatre tonight.

Mhende, who has been acting in theatre since she was seven years old, portrays Kat, a strong, loving woman with colourful dialogue.

"Kat has a lot of my characteristics; this play will literally give fans a sneak peek of who Chi actually is. Just like Chi, Kat is soulful and beyond powerful.

"It will be my first time acting in a romantic production."

Mhende says that Chasing Chairs is about a couple's journey, showcasing the complexities of love.

The play is all art. Colours are used to symbolise the characters' different traits. Green and blue are commonly used to describe growth and cultivation.

"My character represents a variety of emotions that many women will completely relate to.

"The couple's trials and tribulations are displayed on a gorgeous abstract stage. The colours, backdrops and music are really going to fire you up."

She says theatre lovers will learn a lot from Chasing Chairs.

"One of the things that the audience will take home is that there is no right formula to love.

"One must look to themselves, no one else, for the strength and power that will hold their significant other and the glory of their relationship."

Unlike many actors who say they miss stage when doing TV, Mhende, who was born in Zimbabwe, finds joy in working on a new character, regardless of the medium.

What she misses about theatre is the live audience that creates a magical experience.

With many fans only familiar with her role on Generations, the actress says viewers will sense freshness in her role.

She emphasises her love for acting and feels the need to remind viewers that it is a job.

"People need to remember acting is a job, the point is to get yourself into a totally different mind-set from your true character," she adds.

Mhende says viewers are yet to see different canvases of herself.

When the season of the show ends she plans to continue working in TV and theatre, preparing for a very spicy new story line for Wandi.

Asked if she has found her voice in acting, she says: "Definitely. My process is always to go deep. Some call it method acting, I just call it a job.

"I believe every character I play represents someone out there, so my portrayal must do their life and soul justice."
