Hip-hop star AKA allegedly refused to perform at an event he was booked for on Saturday because there were "not enough people" at the venue.

The rapper, whose real name is Kiernan Forbes, 29, was billed to perform at the Mzansi Hip Hop Festival held at the Dries Niemandt Park in Kempton Park .

Event organis ers claimed the star arrived at the venue, sat in his car for an hour and then left.

"I didn't talk to him on the night. I just heard that his people said he wanted to go attend a match or had another event somewhere in Soweto so he had to leave.

"They said we can call him later to come back if we still wanted him to perform, but we didn't," event promoter Vuzokuhle Nala said.

Nala, who owns The Village Events which organised the festival, said they were in talks with AKA's management to recover over R200000 in his performance fees and charges for hospitality requirements.

"We paid all our artists their full performance fees, including AKA. He had the most demands, among some were hospitality requirements.

"He asked that we arrange a top sound system for his live band, which we got without questions," Nala said.

" AKA has tendencies of undermining people and his fans. Why is it that all the artists including Cassper Nyovest, Kwesta and Riky Rick performed and gave it their best regardless of how packed the venue was?

"His management even said to us that this was not his first time cancelling an event like this."

However, when asked by a fan why he didn't perform at the event on Saturday, AKA tweeted that: "There wasn't enough people for me to perform. 500 minimum. It's in my contract."

Nala disputed his statement by saying that the venue had more than 500 people . " I can prove to him that there were more than 500 people there. What proof does he have?"

AKA's road manager Tshiamo Letshwene said the rapper acted according to his contract.

The contract reads: "Should the attendance of the event be less than that of 500 people, the artist reserves the right not to render his performance and the artist will be entitled to 100% of the remuneration; without any refund to the promoter."

Letshwene said AKA had another gig in Soweto he had to attend. "AKA was booked for another show in Nasrec where he performed without any issues. This was the Uefa Champions Final Viewing Party by Heineken."
