Homegrown comedy flick Keeping Up With the Kandasamys continues to break the bank and has raked in a whopping R16 million at the box office.

The flick gives viewers a glimpse into an age-old feud between two neighbouring families — the Kandasamys and the Naidoos.

After years of constant fighting with each other the two matriarchs join forces to split their children who fell in love.

The Kandasamys opened at cinemas across the country on March 3 to much acclaim from viewers.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE Director Jayan Moodley confirmed that the show had raked in just over R16‚3 million after 12 weeks on circuit.

“It’s truly an incredible feeling. The support from viewers has been nothing short of amazing‚” she said.

Jayan added that the encouragement and love from people has been fulfilling.

“As filmmakers we expose ourselves as there is always a little part of us in our stories. When it’s appreciated and loved the way this film is‚ it’s just fulfilling. We make films so that people can watch them and enjoy them‚ and this kind of encouragement from so many people just spurs us on to tell more stories‚” she added.

Jayan‚ who made her directorial debut with this flick‚ explained they were proud of the success. “Most local films are only screened for between three to four weeks‚ so for The Kandasamys to make it to 12 weeks is a big thing‚” she added.

The local filmmaker said that the success of the movie is a big step for the local industry as a whole.

“I think we’re finally starting to build an industry in our beautiful country and telling different stories from diverse cultures. As we grow our viewership and loyalty to local films develops‚ we’ll find more cinemas opening more screens to local films‚” she added.

So‚ can we look forward to The Kandasamys: The Wedding? There’s no plan as yet‚ said Jayan.

“I just feel this incredible amount of gratitude for all the love and for now I’m just enjoying the love and waiting for inspiration to create something‚” she said.

The cast includes Jailoshini Naidoo‚ Maeshni Naicker and Neil Govender. Keeping Up With the Kandasamys is on at selected cinemas nationwide.
