Ndlovu eyes film award

Nonkululeko Ndlovu will walk the red carpet at tomorrow's Saftas a fulfilled woman.

Her passion is paying off handsomely. Her low-budget film Stick-Up is in the running for the Best Made for Television Film award.

The film was acted and produced by a team of students from her Eagles Academy, which trains TV and film students who can't afford tertiary education. It's up against Skorokoro and Die Geur van Appelkose.

Speaking ahead of the big night, the former Miss Soweto and actress says she is ecstatic.

"It shows that small-budget movies are also recognised in the industry. It also means South African movies are growing," she says.

She thanked her production team, whom she says allowed her creative freedom.

"It's the first time I was allowed to do what I wanted as a producer," she says.

Stick-Up tells the story of Tshepo, who lives a dull and boring life as a petrol attendant. He dreams of travelling, a better life and a girlfriend - until one day a stick up happens at the station and Tshepo has two choices: to shrink and stay safe or rise to the occasion and be the hero that could change his uneventful life forever.

Ndlovu wrote, produced and starred in the movie that boasts superb graphics and drone shots. It also features her adopted son Isaac Dennison as Tshepo. Other stars are Andile Mbatha and Mfana Jones Hlophe.

She says although she didn't study film, she gained a lot of knowledge from her father, the revered Duma Ndlovu, creator of SABC2soapie Muvhango and Uzalo on SABC1.
