Zamani Mbatha dreamt of an international soccer career, but spurred on by the success of his famous sister Nomzamo he finds himself on the brink of a big break out role in Isithembiso, the new Mzansi Magic telenovela.

"My dream was to become an international soccer player as that was my first passion. The acting bug bit me when I was inspired by young local actors such as Sdumo Mtshali, Abdul Khoza and Pallance Dladla," Zamani said.

He said after writing his matric exams he asked Nomzamo to let him know of any upcoming auditions.

"She then told me about the auditions that Bomb Productions was having in Durban for Isithembiso. The rest is history."

Zamani beat nearly 3000 aspiring actors following a gruelling talent search for young actors across the land. Kutlwano Ditsele, producer for the telenovela, shared: "We had to find the actors that fit exactly the characters we had created. We had almost given up and were starting to explore re-writing the characters to fit the actors we had seen and then almost close to shoot time we decided to do two more small auditions."

So he flew to Durban and met Zamani who was the only male that showed up to the auditions that day. "He got in front of the camera and upon watching the audition back in Joburg, we knew instantly that we had found our man. Zamani has incredible energy and enthusiasm."

And now as he prepares for his break on April 3 Zamani believes that he won't stay in Nomzamo's shadow.

"I am my own person and my sister also is. We love and support each other. We are the A-Team. Right now my focus is on telling the story well and giving my character life."

He said the best advice he got from his sister is patience.

"My sister has taught me that 'you appreciate things you have worked most hard for rather than those that come easy. So work hard for your dreams and yourself."

Zamani maintains there is no sibling rivalry between them but quips: "I do know that she was dad's favourite but I believe I am my mom's favourite child."

Isithembiso is a story about two promising but naive young matriculants who leave their rural homes to get an education in Johannesburg, where they meet and fall in love.
