SPONSORED | You may have said goodbye to addictive local shows such as Ubizo and Tshisa, but you can now relive all the drama ...

Because they’re all available to stream or download on ShowMax!

1. Ubizo: The Calling

We were hooked on watching successful scientist Nomathemba’s turmoil when she was called by the ancestors to become a sangoma. This miniseries taught us so much about the uthwasa process, and it stayed true to African cultural practices. Remember how scary it was, though, especially when people were possessed by evil spirits? Watch now »

2. Tshisa

The on-screen chemistry in Tshisa between Mbali Mlotshwa, now Mrs Black Coffee, and Bongani Masondo was fiery. They played two youngsters who began hosting a TV show and were suddenly thrown into a world of temptation, drugs, money and fame. After seeing photos of Mbali and Black Coffee’s white wedding in January, we want to remind ourselves of how she got her start, more than a decade ago. Watch now »

3. Running with the Reps

Who could forget the Repertoires? This group of young dancers from Joburg made a name for themselves with their reality show, but it was the drama among the guys, more than their dance moves, that made us take notice. From slaps and fist fights to insults and aggression, there was never a dull moment with this eye-candy gang. Watch now »

4. Shakespeare in Mzansi

This collection of miniseries turns timeless tales into South African stories. We didn’t even realise we were watching stories written by Shakespeare, especially in season one’s Entabeni, the South African version of Macbeth. It’s set in the world of high-flying black businessmen in Joburg, and the backstabbing, murder and marital strife kept us on the edge of our seats. Watch now »

5. Isibaya

Speaking of Shakespeare, Isibaya is Mzansi’s very own Romeo and Juliet, and in the season now on TV, the heat’s been turned way up. Which makes this the perfect time to catch up on the first season, especially if you missed it the first time round and want to get in on the action that goes down between these two feuding families in Thukela Valley and Egoli. 6. When We Were Black

When this aired in 2007, we were all drawn into the turmoil and tension of township life in the 1970s, with the sounds of marabi music and the stirrings of an uprising. We loved Soweto schoolboy Fistos’s antics as he tried to win the heart of a political activist’s girlfriend, but were shocked when we realised the story ended on June 16 1976, a day our country will never forget.
